We see a problem in our society, where many young people at the age from 16yrs to 30yrs face lack of opportunities to develop their very personal skills to the best possible degree they want them. What we see, is a school system, that is mainly driven by the preparation for employment, focusing on the relevant skills to fulfill employers need – while the development of personal skills and interests in art (like painting, photography, dance, music….) is not part of the core curriculum. Which leaves young people, who wish to dig deeper into these field, alone and without support on this journey?
What we see, is an environment, mainly defined by very low financial income and chances to increase these incomes. This has its consequences in the offered quality of schools and other supporting bodies, which are also depending on the same financial cash flow in order to provide a full service, holistic education.
What we see, are many young out on the streets, just “hanging out”, getting in touch with, from our perspective, negative influencing factors like violence, drugs, tribalism as a method for them to express themselves, to get the feeling of being accepted, to get the sense of belonging to a peer group or other social groups.
In addition, we see a lack of, again, in our perspective, positive role models, which can help young people to find their way, to discover their inner strength and desire at an early stage to influence their personal development in a positive way. Above described causes will form the foundation and starting point in our project to move further. But beside to them, we see also some other relevant root causes, which we at least want to note down and consider them on the way when moving forward.
There is also a historical dimension in the root causes, all the above mentioned systems have their history and have been designed and implemented with the best intentions of the responsible bodies and/or persons – therefore it needs to get considered. Anyhow, it was implemented by people, so we as people of another generation can change them to the “better”.
There is a general lower acceptance and value seen in areas of art or sport since our actual society seems to be very money and value driven – it you can´t put a value to it, it seems to be not in the same way relevant than others.
Our mission is to develop young positive change-makers in informal settlement in Kenya.
Our vision is to mentor self-confident young people who inspires positive social change in the society using their talents and skills.
